Christchurch’s Villa Maria College opened its defence campaign in the South Island secondary schools’ netball tournament with three crushing victories yesterday at Blenheim.

Villa, seeking a recordequalling fourth consecutive title, walloped Columba 58-14 in its opening section match before disposing of Menzies and Nelson in comprehensive fashion.

Rangi Ruru, who may pick to oppose Villa in Friday’s final, also went through yesterday’s games undefeated after its section was weakened by the withdrawal of Dunedin’s Logan Park. Marlborough Girls’ also threw its hat in the ring with two stylish wins, including a 66-15 romp over Christchurch Girls’.

Other unbeaten teams in the A grade Otago Shield championship include Verdon (Invercargill), Taieri (Dunedin) and Southland Girls, while St Peters currently leads its section after downing the more-fancied Craighead Diocesan (Timaru) and Linwood (Christchurch). Mount Aspiring and Tokomairio look to be the teams to beat in the B grade Nellie Marsh Cup championship after impressive wins on the first day.
