Judge refuses bail
A man, aged 37, accused of setting fire to St Paul’s Church in central Auckland was refused bail by a judge yesterday. Gerard Lambton Peter Carter, an order man, of no fixed address, appeared before Judge John Cadenhead in the District Court in Auckland and was remanded to September 4. Carter did not plead to charges of wilfully setting fire to the church in Symonds Street, causing more than $lOOO damage to the church, damaging a car and stealing a briefcase and its contents valued at 42400.—PA.
