Ascot racegoers collapse in heat
NZPA-AP London Fashionably dressed racegoers sweltered at the opening of the four-day royal Ascot meeting, and more than 50 collapsed in the heat, first-aid workers said. “We’ve been very, very busy,” said a St John Ambulance spokeswoman. Mild sunstroke or fainting spells were the most common, she said. On the hottest June day for 13 years, at 31deg. C,
the champagne stalls were extra busy. The price of a bottle ranged from £l5 to £45 ($NZ40.38-$NZ121.16). Rules barring anyone younger than 16 in the Royal enclosure until Friday, the last day, were broken to admit the ' Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Phillips, aged eight, daughter of Princess Anne and described by one reporter as “already horse mad.”
