Ice hockey champs in Chch

The Big Apple Ice Arena is the venue this week-end for the largest ice hockey tournament ever held in New Zealand, and 14 teams from all over the country compete for the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation’s Club Championship. Teams from Auckland, Alexandra, Gore, Albury, and Queenstown will play against the Canterbury teams, in an A and B pool, involving 200 senior players. The competition begins with one game tomorrow evening, and games will be played all day on Friday.

The semi-finals will be held on Saturday and the finals for both pools will be on Sunday. The Blades, from Canterbury, last year’s winners, may be the favourite to win, although a strong contingent of four teams from Auckland will give all Canterbury’s teams some strong competition.
