Talks bid to avoid air strike

By

LES BLOXHAM,

travel editor Air New Zealand and its pilots will meet for informal talks in Auckland this morning in a bid to break a deadlock which is again threatening to ground flights. The Air Line Pilots’ Association has given notice to Air New Zealand and its subsidiaries, Mount Cook Airlines and Safe Air, that it will strike for 12 hours on Wednesday if agreement is not reached regarding its claim for a group

award. The strike would effectively ground all flights of the three airlines from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. The services of Ansett New Zealand and smaller airlines would not be affected. The strike would be the third in less than two months. An Air New Zealand spokesman said yesterday that the company was optimistic that the deadlock would be broken at today’s meeting.
