Dutchman disappears
A Dutch rider, Johan van der Velde, has disappeared without trace from the Giro d’ltalia cycle race, organisers said yesterday. They said van der Velde checked out of his hotel in the Adriatic resort of Riccione before dawn taking his belongings. He left no messages and did not make contact with his team. Van der Velde, aged 32, finished last in Wednesday’s tenth stage, an individual time trial from Pesaro to Riccione, and was penalised by the jury for apparently racing in the slipstream of a car.—NZPA-Reuter.
