Southland raid on Hutt Park

Wellington correspondent

The Southland trainer, Bryce Buchanan, will be making a rare visit to Hutt Park when he lines up Noble Fella and King Red on the first night of the Wellington Harness Racing Club’s meeting tonight.

Buchanan has never sent a horse to the capital previously but recalls driving at Hutt Park about 25 years ago when a probationary driver with Jack Carmichael at Templeton.

He has never won a race on the track but has some confidence tonight, particularly with King Red, which has drawn barrier one in the Petone Rugby Football Club Mobile Pace. “He won three starts back at Oamaru and has had two luckless runs since then,” he said. "He finished on well from last at Timaru and then never got off the fence at Addington last start.” He expects King Red to be hard to beat from his draw.

Buchanan is also hopeful of a top run from Noble Fella, which is on the comeback trail after suffering a leg problem. He was off the scene for some 16 months after some swelling developed below a fetlock joint on his near front leg.

“He never went sore or lame but the swelling kept reoccurring,” Buchanan said.

“He was given a long break and his leg is as good as gold now.” A five-year-old by Son Of Afella, Noble Fella is a half-brother to the talented performers, Lord Hillas, Carefree Princess and Horatius. Noble Fella has fashioned a fine record himself, winning six of his 13 starts when trained by Syd Brown at Dunedin. Business commit-

ments prevented Brown from continuing with the training and the gelding was switched to Buchanan, who had been the horse's regular driver. He has now had two starts for Buchanan, finishing fifth at Timaru on May 20 and sixth at Addington last Friday Both those runs have been over 3200 metres and though he had his chance on each occasion, Buchanan expects him to be improved by the runs. He has drawn awkwardly at No. 6 on the front line for tonight’s Heather Mackinnon Recovery Mobile Pace (2400 m but must still be rated a top prospect. His toughest opposition is likely to come from Mullagahmena and Bionic Raider.

Mullagahmena has been racing consistently in the north, with two thirds and a fourth at his last three starts. His latest run was at Alexandra Park last Saturday when he produced a solid effort for fourth. He is favoured by the No. 1 draw tonight. Bionic Raider's latest efforts are only moderate but he is a classy performer on his day and should measure up here. He has the services of Maurice McKendry.

In an even line-up, Machismo. Saieda Girl and Bold Sharvid are also capable of producing strong efforts. Fast Spender, a three-year-old filly, could gain a deserved win in the second leg, the Poneke RFC Mobile Pace. She has been placed at her last five starts and was late clear when finishing second at Hawera midweek.

Miss Ardmore is struggling to regain form but has more class than most in this line-up, while Mistabell is a likely improver.
