Police wait on forensic tests

PA Auckland The West Auckland police are awaiting results of D.S.I.R. forensic tests before they decide if further charges will be laid against a youth after the stabbing of an elderly deaf woman on Tuesday. Beatrice May Birch, aged 77, was found stabbed to death in her Ranui home with wounds to her chest and back. A knife was found nearby, but the police have not positively identified it as the death weapon. A large team of police is now searching the elderly woman’s house and surrounding area, questioning neighbours and searching for clues. A youth, aged 17, was charged with burglary of the woman’s home and was due to appear in the District Court at Henderson yesterday. The police say today will be the earliest they have results of forensic tests and can decide on further charges. The woman’s badly bruised body was discovered by her daughter, who lives next door, and the police have described the killing as a brutal and vicious attack.
