Shots fired in struggle with gunman
PA Wellington Two shots were fired in a struggle with a gunman before he was overpowered and taken into custody at Murupara yesterday, the police said. The Hawke’s Bay man, hunted by the police since Monday, was discovered in an unoccupied house on the outskirts of the town about 9 a.m.
Two Murupara policemen, acting on information from Rotorua, struggled with the armed man as they attempted to take him into custody. . Two shots were fired but no-one was injured, said Sergeant Gary Farrell, of Rotorua. The police had been after the man, aged 26, since investigation of a sports shop
robbery in Waipukurau. The man was found’ loading sports bags into a car which earlier was reported stolen. He levelled an old double-barrel shotgun, allegedly taken from the shop, at Sergeant Russ Chant, of Waipukurau, and told him to back off. Sergeant Chant did so and moved his car out of the way so the man could drive away.
