Nude bathing

Sir, —Nude sea bathing (April 11) is already common practice on many beaches in New Zealand and overseas. An amendment to our by-law regarding the requirement to be “properly and sufficiently clad” would, therefore, be welcomed. My family and I (three generations) prefer to swim au naturel whenever possible. There is nothing offensive about taking off one’s garments in order to shower, bathe or swim. It is the obvious thing to do. Coming out of the sea naked feels warm,. exhilarating and invigorating; Whereas a clingy wet

costume adhering to one’s torso is a cold, unpleasant experience. New Zealand has miles of wonderful beaches. There is surely room for everyone. Please allow us freedom of choice and use of discretion to swim naked on quiet beaches without fear of recrimination.—Yours, etc., JOYCE FLEMING. April 20, 1989.
