Fire ban
Sir,—ln reply to J. H. Jackson (April 15), I suggest that he multiplies $8 an hour by 8 hours a day (and possibly allows two days for some sections over 24 perches) and for one day alone it costs $64. To persuade larger branches to fit into 44-gallon drums is not very practical and to cut the prunings-trimmings up is also labour-intensive. I recently had a quote for a massive heap of garden rubbish (toppings, prunings, etc) of $420 (two days, two men, plus dumping fees). Not all areas are served by the larger bin agencies and not everyone has a car with a towbar for a trailer. With the burning there is an anomaly. Farmers within the Canterbury inversion layer are still allowed to burn and when the wind is in the right direction I have watched the build-up (outside the city) of the smoke, that has waited until dusk to descend on Christchurch.— Yours, etc., J. BARCHAM. April 19, 1989.
