Games promotion
Sir,—Do we have to see New Zealand history rewritten in order to foster the belief that the Commonwealth Games are a valid enterprise? The protracted television commercial about a group of soldiers engaged in a light-hearted running race at Passchendaele has little to do with the grim realities of the time. The battle at Passchendaele cost nearly 3000 New Zealand men their lives. If they were running it was more to avoid being shelled by British artillery while trying to gain less than 200 yards. The horror is as glossed over today as it was when the incident was reported in 1917. I fail to see the connection between the Commonwealth Games and an outright wartime massacre.—Yours, etc., C. A. STUART. Afrril 16, 1989.
