Medical research

Sir, —Professor Fraser makes a good point when he says (April 7) that Canterbury people should join the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation. It is a local organisation which funds local people to do medical research. How many of us have not benefited from medical research? Today I talked to someone who had a serious operation for bowel cancer at Christmas and for days hovered between life and death. Next week she is flying to England to visit her son. Not too many years ago she could not have expected to have survived this long. A country which does not invest in research to improve its quality of life, whether . it be industrial, educational, scientific, or medical research, clearly cannot ex-

pect to keep up with developments in the rest of the world and to share in others’ prosperity. We in Canterbury are very lucky to have a thriving medical research funding organisation. The address of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation is P.O. Box 2682, Christchurch. Let us all give it our support. —

Yours, etc., ROS BURDON. April 10, 1989.
