Mixed culture
Sir, —As a newcomer from England I am surprised and very disappointed with all the racial prejudice in New Zealand. New Zealanders have a name for everyone — Poms, Aussies, etc. Maoris do not like pakehas and pakehas do not like Maoris. Where I come from, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, there is a lot of racial hatred and not one black person is to be found in Barnsley. New Zealand is a relatively new country and we should all be leaving the past behind and learning from Britain’s mistakes, as she is the “Mother Country” for a lot of us. The Maoris were here before us, but they should learn to accept the pakeha, as a mixed culture is the the only way. I hope we can be more positive and strive together to make a lovely country; an example to all. — Yours, etc., HELEN EAST. April 7, 1989.
