Unions
Sir, —If Mr K. Brougham (April 3) understands the actions of employers better than I then he obviously is an advocate of casualising the workforce, driving down workers’ living standards through wage reductions and the erosion of working conditions, because this is what true labour market flexibility represents. Before Mr Brougham starts to espouse the theory of rational discussion by all parties concerned for the viability of an enterprise he should be reminded that unions have long advocated this concept only to be blocked by employers who will not reveal all information relating to that enterprise. If information is not provided there is no meaningful discussion. Workers who think they can achieve more than any union are only deluding themselves, as under the true free market policies they would
be worse off as they would have no protection at all from unscrupulous employers. — Yours, etc.,
K. L. J. HAWKINS. April 6, 1989.
