Grey dredge

Sir, —As. the huge American dredge begins to eat its way about the Grey Valley on the West Coast I get more and more furious. Dairy farmers are being forced off their farms in its path. A large island in the river — with its valuable topsoil — has been washed to sea, following the company’s stripping of its ground cover, in the last flood. The dredge’s motors, interfering with our phones, make communication difficult. And the great, gobbling monster is lit up all night with a myriad of large orange lights. There is no escaping the dredge and its greedy eyes and gobbling jaws. — Yours, etc., ALICE JOHNS. April 5, 1989.
