Ban on open fires

Sir, —Were I queen for a day, all open fires, approved stoves and rubbish fires in cities would be banned, as no-one has the right, any longer, to pollute other people’s air. This immutable truth has been recognised for cigarette smoke but, not yet, for chimneys and rubbish fires. The society, however, is committed to more rational, and equitable, solutions. Only a quarter of the coal used in the thirties is now burnt in Christchurch. Since a survey on home heating in 1981 fewer people rely entirely on the open fire and many have moved from open fires to electricity or approved appliances which, if improperly operated, become the new enemy. Successful burning, by whatever method, requires efficient equipment, suitable fuel and a conscientious operator. If open fires are to continue, the owners, like all polluters, should be made accountable for their nuisance.—Yours, etc., JANET R. HOLM, President, N.Z. Clean Air Society. April 5, 1989.
