Residents evacuated
The withdrawal of six residents at the Rakaia Huts yesterday at 9 p.m. because of flooding of the Rakaia River came in the nick of time, said Constable Don Robertson of the Ashburton police last evening. High tide was due at 10 p.m. and at the time of evacuation by the Rakaia Search and Rescue Group, the flooding had made an island where the huts stand. The river had come up to the stop banks and the Ashburton and Rakaia police had to close off the road to the huts.
