Soviet captain an Ice veteran

PAM MORTON

After 13 voyages to the Antarctic the continent holds no new wonders for Captain Mikhail Mikhailov, of the Soviet scientific research vessel Akademik Federov.

Captain Mikhailov is a regular visitor to the Ice supplying goods and delivering scientific staff to the Soviet Union’s eight bases.

The ship is on her first visit to Lyttelton and will return to the Antarctic with supplies before sailing to her home port of Leningrad. One of six Soviet supply ships the Akademik Federov was built in 1987.

She is designed to carry personnel, cargo and supplies to the Antarctic as well as conducting scientific research. On board are 12 laboratories with the latest in research and communication equipment. The 20 scientific staff on board carry out meteorological, oceanographical, ecological and ice research.

Captain Mikhailov said about 250 scientific staff would winter over on the Soviet Union’s eight bases. The supply ships are not expected to return to the region until September, 1989. The ship will leave Lyttelton on Saturday to return to the Ice.
