Mayoralty rivals at odds

Two possible rivals for the mayoralty of the new Christchurch City, Mrs Margret Murray and Ms Vicki Buck, are at odds again. At a public meeting on Tuesday evening, Mrs Murray, the Waimairi District chairman, called on Ms Buck, a councillor on the Christchurch City Council and a member of the Local Government Commission, to give up one of her “conflicting” roles. It is a call Mrs Murray has made before, claiming Ms Buck should not be allowed to hold both positions. Last evening Ms Buck "She

knows quite well there is no conflict in the positons. I have taken no part in the Christchurch reform at council level or at the commission. I have been scrupulous in that.” If Mrs Murray wanted to stand for the mayoralty of the new city she should stop being negative, said Ms Buck. » Both Ms Buck and Mrs Murray have yet to confirm their availability for the mayoralty. Only the Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, and a Labour Christchurch City councillor, Mr David Close, have done so. |
