Carpenters strike over redundancies

Twenty-five Carpenters’ Union members at Wardrops Fibrous Plaster, Ltd, are on strike over redundancies at the Moorhouse Avenue firm. Six workers at the factory, which makes cornices and other products, were given 10 minutes notice of redundancies on Friday evening. They were each handed a week’s pay in lieu of notice.

Mr Paul Johnson, a

union spokesman, said yesterday that the firm had refused to pay the men redundancy. The firm’s 25 staff have been picketing outside the factory.

The strike would continue until the management agreed to negotiate a redundancy package, Mr Johnson said. The firm’s manager, Mr Robin Rennell, declined to comment on the dispute.
