Wells challenged
Rick Wells faces one of the hardest races of his life in the final round of the Kiwi Lager Tri Series starting at Scarborough. Beach tomorrow. The former world champion will be out to head arch rivals Scott Molina and Mark Allen. Molina is the world ironman champion and Allen is the five-times middle distance triathlon champion. Wells is the series leader and this will be his last outing before next month’s ironman in Auckland. Wells has a seven-min-ute series lead over Gary Werner and Bruce Baxter who are second and third and seems certain to take
the over-all title. Erin Baker heads the top women’s field and will .be vying for the $lOOO first prize for the race as will the American Colleen Cannon, a previous winner at Nice. Sue Clark leads the series for women by three minutes from Anne Docker. Strong .team entries have been ' recevied for the Christchurch I.skm swim, 40km cycle and 10km run. Olympic cyclists Brian Fowler and Graeme Miller, along with a New Zealand woman cyclist, Sally .Fraser, will appear and will be-sup-ported in the running by names like Peter Renner, and Tom Birnie. •
