Centuries elude batsmen

PA Wellington Batsmen enjoyed moderate' success but suffered fcflual disappointment on ■jpe second day of the shell Trophy cricket match between Wellington and Central Districts at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Scott Briasco was out on the first day for 97 and John Smith for 70, Graham Burnett and Tim Ritchie were both out for 84 yesterday and Smith for 62. Each batsman has made a significant contribution to a match which is poised to yield a clear result today but none received the ultimate reward of an individual century. Wellington achieved a four-run first innings lead, declaring at 309 for 5 yesterday in reply to Central’s first innings of 305

for* 4 declared. Central was 101 for 4 in its second innings at stumps, 96 runs ahead with six second wickets in hand. Wellington could be mildly satisfied with its performance yesterday as it achieved the first of a two-part mission when it claimed four points for a first innings lead and then progressed towards its second, larger objective when it removed four batsmen inexpensively before stumps. Despite wet and dull weather preventing the start of play from begining on time Auckland had managed to secure first

innings points by stumps — something that can only be, denied it if the match ends in a tie. The former New Zealand captain, Jeff Crowe, showed his class with a superb 95 but the wily spinner, Stephen Boock, struck to deny Crowe what would have been a well deserved third century this season.
