Taxation

Sir,—l agree wholeheartedly with Murray Jefferson (February 3) when he talks of an increase in taxation being the death warrant for Labour and of how what we need is a huge reduction in Government spending, not an increase in taxation. If my household budget does not balance I do not hit my husband up for an increase in allowance; I spend more wisely. The Government could learn to do the same and we would all be better off — my household budget included. — Yours, etc., ANNE CLARKE. February 10, 1989.

Sir,—l totally agree with the ideas of Murray Jefferson (February 3) regarding tax increases this Labour Government is. considering imposing on the eversuffering taxpayer. The total tax

take has increased dramatically since Labour took office and the working man is the one most hurt by this vicious and callous tax system. The time for a system of referendums is well overdue so the people can have a direct say in the tax system and the ever-increasing rate. Tax reduction, reduced Government spending and deregulation of the economy are the solutions to our problems and the only way we are going to change is for the people of New Zealand to have a say by way of a referendum. Then, and only then, will this country be a true democracy.— Yours, etc., SAM STEWART. February 7, 1989.
