Emperor’s death
Sir, —Mrs J. Dyer (February 7) asks who has the audacity to expect those who suffered in Japanese camps to forget. As World War II was fought more than 40 years ago, we should forget the past and live for the future. Although Japan was defeated in the war, that country has made tremendous progress in raising the standard of living for its own people because it has a benevolent Government providing money for social services. As it is expensive to go to Tokyo for Emperor Hirohito’s funeral, TVNZ should televise it so we can watch it, just as we watch sport played in foreign countries.—Yours, etc., ALICE TURNER. February 8, 1989.
