Jet-assisted bowling

By

MICHAEL DEACON

The cricketer, Lance Cairns, is claiming a new world “record” in batting. The record has seen him make the ball travel at speeds in excess of 800km/hour.

But before you reach for the “Guinness Book of Records” in disbelief, it must be said that he was also travelling at 30,000 feet.

it was all part of Air New Zealand’s promotion of its inaugural flight to Cairns from Auckland at the week-end.

The sportsman, along with other personalities and dignitaries, joined the flight on Saturday, and en route the batsman played cricket with the plane’s captain. The Boeing 767’s air speed, of course, played a

big part in the record ball speed. Cairns also carefully missed the windows with his “boundary” shots, although anxiety among passengers would have been misplaced — the ball was soft. Air New Zealand now runs the weekly Auck-land-Cairns service every Saturday, with a link from Christchurch.
