Lucky escape
A Greymouth woman grabbed her baby and leapt from a van moments before it burst into flame at Awatuna, north of Hokitika, on Friday afternoon.
Mrs Barbara Moynihan was shaken, but unhurt. She was driving towards Hokitika when she noticed something wrong with the van’s electrical system. Sensing that the engine was about to catch fire, she slowed down, grabbed her baby and jumped from the vehicle. The van rolled a few more metres down the road before bursting into flame.
Traffic between Hokitika and Greymouth was banked up for a short time about 2.45 p.m. as the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade extinguished the fire. The vehicle was extensively damaged.
