Trackwork

Awapuni Special correspondent Palmerston North The good sprinter, Laurent, was impressive in his final trial at Awapuni yesterday morning as he prepared for the Rahui Handicap at the Otaki-Maori meeting tomorrow. Laurent has made tremendous improvement lately. Suzanne Gordon will ride him in the second leg of the Otaki-Maori double.

Laurent worked on the plough which was fast. He was soon into stride, running 800 m in 50, the last 600 m in 37. He has the form to suggest a big chance this weekend.

Le Hawk was again in fine form, running 1000 m in 1:3, the last 600 m in 38. He has the makings of a good stayer and should go well in the highweight tomorrow. Sir Lotto, which will be hard to beat against the maidens tomorrow, reeled off 600 m in 36.6. He has an inside draw and Robert Hannam will ride him.

Promising Glitz, which should go well in the Raceway Caterers’ Maiden, sprinted 600 m in 37.4 and Merchant Banker ran 37 for a similar task.

Tasha and Lutece worked impressively over 800 metres in 50, the last 600 m in 37. Both are in at Otaki. Lutece has disappointed lately but gets another chance in the Caltex Handicap. Zelazny, engaged in the Caltex Handicap, worked lazily over 1200 m in 1:25, thelast 600 m in 41. Maurice Campbell rides him. Fiddlers Three, another in the Caltex, left 1000 behind in 1:5, the last 600 m in 39. He has done well since a bold race at Wanganui.

On the course proper, Amorous sprinted brilliantly in preparation for the Concorde next week. She ran the distance in 49, the last 600 m in a sizzling 35. She is right at her best.

Cotton Club, a second-day runner at Otaki, also impressed, running 600 m in 35. He is extra well.

Pauline Marie completed 800 m in 53, the last 600 m in 38 and Cuivre, in the Caltex at Otaki, came home strongly from the 1000 m recording 1:8.4, the last 600 m in 38.4. He is an improved horse with a chance tomorrow.

Woodville Special correspondent Woodville Hypothermia galloped smartly at Woodville yesterday morning in her final trial for the Vintage Car Maiden at the Otaki-Maori meeting tomorrow while Festal and Kate’s Myth also attracted attention in a quiet session. Fast work took place on the middle of the course proper, which was in perfect order.

Hypothermia did better than Divine King over 1000 m in 1:3.5, the last 600 m in 38. Hypothermia has run three sound races to date and should show up again tomorrow.

Festal was sent the reverse way, completing his last 600 m in 39.3. He actually went 1000 m and was being eased down at the finish. Festal has done well since Riccarton and starts in the Concorde at Avondale next week.

Kate’s Myth ran 1000 m comfortably in 1:5.8, the last 600 m in 37.7. She is making good progress and is entered for next week’s Bakharoff Stakes.

Spot of Gold worked keenly over 1000 m in 1:4.2, the last 600 m in 36.7. He is in the final event at Otaki.

Iced Court galloped 800 m in 53.8, the last 600 m in 38.8. Idle Glory and High Astra had more pace on when they ran 800 m in 49.8, the final 600 m in 36.4.

Our High Noon and Otaki runner Frasertown pleased over 1000 m in 1:3.4, the last 600 m in 36.3. Ngawi Bay, rarely a smart track worker, ran 1200 m in 1:28.5, the last 600 m in 43.3.

Trail Blazer, Ibanez and Kotahi Jim were together at the end of 1200 m in 1:18.6, the last 600 m in 38. Kotahi Jim could go well in the So Dandy Handicap at Otaki. Go Bush has stayed in the north and will contest next Wednesday’s Avondale Cup. He finished at the rear in last week’s Counties Cup. Although he has handled soft and firm tracks, Go Bush was all at sea in the slippery conditions at Pukekohe and nearly fell several times.
