Red Hawk hurt
Red Hawk was yesterday listed as a non-runner at Riccarton tomorrow, by trainer Barry Taggart, because of the effects of a stone bruise. Taggart is uncertain whether Red Hawk’s proposed northern campaign will go ahead much depending on the horse’s rate of recovery. John Dowling was hopeful of resuming riding tomorrow earlier in the week but has decided against seeking a final clearance today.
Dowling has been sidelined for a lengthy period with hand injuries. His younger son, Sean, has not helped the family luck either. He is apprenticed to the O’Sullivan stable but has had the misfortune to suffer a broken leg. It is the second serious injury to the same leg in the last 12 months and the timing could not have been worse for the young rider.
Chris Johnson will be able to ride work and attend race meetings as from Saturday after a decision by the Queensland racing authorities to reduce the balance of his six month penalty to a suspension rather than a disqualification. Johnson is able to resume riding on January 10.
