Tax demands

Sir,—Miss L. M. Lummis (October 3) is correct when she says that Mr de Cleene’s bloodhounds have slipped their leash. Earlier this year I received a demand for additional income tax when I had expected a refund. Fortunately, I had my tax return prepared by an accountant as I was quite unable to understand the superannuation surcharge calculations. My accountant was able to ascertain that I was being overcharged by several hundred dollars and, eventually, I received a refund which was several dollars short of the correct amount. No explanation! No apology! On presenting myself at the tax office and complaining that I had been short-changed, I was assured I

had been refunded the correct amount. I thereon presented them with a letter detailing what I believed to be the correct position. I have since received a letter agreeing I was correct, an apology for this last mistake and a refund of the full amount; no apology or explanation for the original error.—Yours, etc., S. KERR.
