Cobblestones
Sir, —The Works and Traffic Committee wants to replace perfectly good footpaths with cobblestones (at a total cost of $385,000) to “provide a visual link between city amenities.” What a great idea! Tourists will not need maps; they can just "follow the yellow-brick road.” We already have a Wizard and an Emerald City (the Parkßoyal). All we need now is a Dorothy to lead the singing, as visitors move around our central city with their eyes glued to the cobblestones, and volunteers to play the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, and we are in business! What a comfort to the Aranui ratepayers who petitioned the same committee to replace their dangerous 30-year-old footpaths, so they can walk around without getting hurt. When deciding how to spend our money, councillors should recognise that the basic needs of the ratepayers come before unnecessary “extras” for tourists. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) ANN LEWIS.
