Killings ‘out of ordinary’-—Tapsell
PA Wellington The Disorderly Assemblies Bill, now before Parliament, could help relieve gang problems, the Minister of Police, Mr Tapsell, believes. He told Parliament yesterday the gang killings in Wairoa were “sudden” and “extraordinary” and there was little police could do in such situations.
“While the police will do everything they can to prevent crime and to apprehend criminals, the
ultimate answer in preventing lawless behaviour among young people lies very much with the iocal community.”
Legislation suggested by the Opposition recently to “get tough with gangs” was impractical, he said. He thought the Disorderly Assemblies Bill would help but said there was “hardly any legislation which will prevent a quite extraordinary and totally irresponsible act of this particular sort.”
