Hawke report backed
Distinctions between education and training should be avoided, the Christchurch Polytechnic’s acting director, Dr Graham Logan, told its council last evening. This view was supported by the Hawke report. Commenting on the Hawke report on postcompulsory education and training, Dr Logan also said that he agreed with the report’s statement that we should be a separate agency to fund research
within the post-compul-sory sector. Bulk bids by institutes should be considered as a possibility, to avoid a piecemeal, inefficient approach, he said. Research finding should be available on a threeyear basis. Dr Logan said that he “strenuously opposed” the proposed system of a graduate loans tax. A sub-committee of the council will consider the council’s submissions on the Hawke report.
