Polytech will try again with diploma

The Christchurch Polytechnic will continue efforts to allow it to offer the national diploma in accountancy again next year.

The council began the course this year, and then after visits by the accreditation team was told that it could not offer the course next year. The Polytechnic’s associate director, Ms Shona Butterfield, said the Polytechnic was committed to the students and the community. Statements by the local branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and by members of the business community supported the continuation of the course, Ms Butterfield said.

While the Polytechnic accepted that it had not always been able to implement the wishes of the national accreditation team, some steps had not

been followed by the team, Ms Butterfield said. The Authority for Advanced Vocational Awards which made the final decision on where the course could be offered was not due to meet until December, Ms Butterfield said. “We find it difficult to accept that decisions which have such farreaching consequences are not being made more quickly, so that students know where they stand and the institutions can plan appropriately for next year.”
