Plans for two new centres

Riccarton may have a new sports centre and community centre if the Riccarton Borough Council gets its way. The council hopes to build a sports centre on part of the Wharenui School playground at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Matipo Street, and a new community centre opposite Riccarton Town Hall in Clarence Street.
A meeting of the council’s community affairs committee last evening resolved that a special sub-committee be appointed to assess the suitability of the two sites, and negotiate with the parties involved. The sub-committee would talk to the Canterbury Education Board and Wharenui School about the Wharenui site.
The Riccarton Method-
ist Church had already indicated it was interested
in a co-operative venture with the council for a community centre at the Nelson Street and Clarence Street corner. Together the buildings are estimated to cost between $650,000 to $BOO,OOO. The Town Clerk of Riccarton, Mr Don Hampton, said funds for the buildings would come from the council’s reserve fund
which now held about $150,000. The Amuri subdivision, the Riccarton Business Park, would contribute to building costs, as would additional parties yet to be discussed. The Riccarton Borough Council’s administration centre might be moved into the community centre, but this was still under negotiation, Mr Hampton said.
