Steroid accusation

NZPA-AFP

Toronto

A Canadian Olympic sprinter yesterday claimed Ben Johnson, stripped of his Olympic 100 m crown for taking drugs, was also on drugs when he won the world title in Rome last year. Angella Taylor Issajenko, admitting she had taken anabolic steroids, said in preparing for both the Olympics and world championships Johnson knew what he was taking. She said her drugs had been supplied by Johnson’s personal doctor, Jamie Astaphan, whom she claimed was responsible for supplying drugs at the Mazda Optimist Track Club in Toronto. Issajenko said Charlie Francis, who coaches both her and Ben Johnson, knew what Dr Astaphan was doing. “I’m fed up with all the bull ... Ben takes steroids. I take steroids. Jamie gives them to us and Charlie isn’t a scientist but he knows what’s happening.”
