D.S.W., R.S. A. at odds

The Christchurch Returned Services Association claims the Government is welching on its obligations to veterans still suffering from war wounds. The Christchurch R.S.A. requested the Department of Social Welfare to pay the full cost of surgery in a private hospital because of long waiting lists for public hospital surgical beds.

A written reply from the Minister of Social Welfare, Dr Cullen, said that the department would pay only for a private hospital bed and that surgery and other costs should be met by the war pensioner, said the Christchurch R.S.A.

treasurer, Mr John .Masters.

Dr Cullen said the economic climate now meant he could not recommend further Government funding “for a group who already enjoy substantial financial advantages when compared with a civilian faced with the prospect of paying for private hospital treatment.”

"The Christchurch R.S.A. was not prepared to have pensioners suffer any longer whilst waiting for a hospital bed, and arranged surgery in a private hospital for the two current cases, at a net cost of over $7500 to the association after the bed subsidy,” Mr Masters said.
