Charity golf

New Zealand’s biggest amateur charity golf tournament — “The Press” Garden City Classic — will benefit The Child Cancer Foundation-Canterbury Accommodation Trust this year. Proceeds from the two-day event will be used to meet the costs of one of the refurbished accommodation units at a suitable home which has been acquired by the trust. The foundation provides assistance, education and continuing support for children with cancer and their families. The tournament, now in its twelfth year, will be held on the two Harewood courses on November 19 and 20. Entries will be accepted in teams of four or as individuals, pairs or threes. The format involves aggregate stableford scores for each member of a team of four over both rounds. Players have a round on each course. The prize list extends to at least 30 places and there are special prizes for nearest to the pin, for the longest drive, for eagles on a specified hole and for the putting competition held on the practice green. The tournament usually raises about $lO,OOO each year. Entries for this year’s event close on November 14.
