Police hunt for killers

PA Wellington Lower Hutt police began a homicide inquiry yesterday after a man, who was beaten with a piece of wood by five men in Petone on Friday night, died in Wellington Hospital. He was Sonnie Hunt, aged 24, of Petone. Mr Hunt was attacked soon after a near-collision

at the Petone offramp and a high speed car chase which ended in Petone’s main street. He was punched and beaten about the head before his assailants, described as Polynesian men in their early 20s, made off in a blue stationwaggon. Police found him lying in a nearby side steet. Police urged witnesses or people with knowledge

of the attack to contact them. A team of detectives from throughout the Wellington area, headed by Detective Senior-Sergeant Bill Gregory, made door-to-door inquiries near the scene yesterday. A length of timber was found near the scene of the attack. Police believe it was used by Mr Hunt’s attackers.
