Week-end leaves five dead

Two young men died in separate car accidents near Christchurch at>the week-end. The first accident occurred shortly after 11.30 p.m. on Saturday on McLeans Island Road, about Ikm east of Pound Road. The front-seat passenger of the car died when the vehicle collided with a power pole. He was Robert John Nash, aged 23. The driver, who was the only other occupant, was

taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries. His name was not available yesterday. The other accident happened at 1.25 a.m. yesterday, about 3km from Woodend on j Kippenburger Avenue, near State Highway 72.. - The vehicle struck a bridge railing, ; which came through the windshield, killing the driver instantly. She was reported to be in a satisfactory condition.

© A woman died after a two-car collision on State Highway 3 near Te Kuiti. She was Jennifer Mary Wilson, aged 37, of Taharoa. She was taken by helicopter from the crash scene to Waikato Hospital but died six hours later. Police said the two cars were travelling north to Te Kuiti. One pulled in front of the other, forcing it off the road into a tree. Firemen had to be called to help cut people free from the vehicle.
