Stress caused by unemployment was having an adverse effect on race relations, health and family life and soon welfare services would not be able to cope, according to the leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger Commenting on the latest unemployment statistics Mr Bolger said jobless numbers “tend to understate the very real damage being done to the social fabric of this country by such high levels.” Race relations, health and family life were being damaged, he said., “The stress being placed on unemployed people is mounting to unbearable levels.” Unemployed people were losing hope of ever finding a job, said Mr Bolger. “Job creation schemes which involve community work are needed now,” he said.
