America’s Cup
Sir, —After watching the afterrace ceremonies and press conference from the America’s Cup on TV, I was disgusted to see Dennis Conner and some of his team’s unsportsmanlike conduct toward the New Zealand design team and crew. Eyfin at the start W
of the race the most patriotic of Kiwis knew we would lose but, in spite of all of the criticisms and setbacks, it was really great to see the Kiwis give it their best shot as only Kiwis do. Even down to the awards ceremonies the team should be congratulated for outclassing the Yanks in every aspect of the entire race, especially managing to maintain their sportsmanlike conduct through thick and thin — something the Stars and Stripes syndicate should take a good look at next time around. In my eye the Kiwis really upstaged the Americans until the end. — Yours, etc., J. JOHNSTON. September 10,1988.
