Unleaded petrol
Sir,—Many motorists are wasting their money and unnecessarily polluting the atmosphere of our city with lead from petrol exhausts. I say this as I have a typical Japanese car (Toyota Corona 1980) that runs perfectly well on unleaded petrol. There is no need to risk engine problems if you try unleaded petrol. Just add unleaded petrol to the largely empty tank. In this way the concentration of unleaded petrol increases at every top-up. If you strike problems, just fill the tank with super to restore a sufficient octane, rating. I suggest that motorists give unleaded petrol a try. Car firms could publish a list of cars that will run on lead-free petrol. Those associated with our City Council or any other body concerned for the health of our citizens, could actively promote the use of lead-free petrol in Christchurch. — Yours, etc., NORMAN WILKINS.
