Welfare State’s gold
It is 50 years since the passing of the Social Security Act and the anniversary was commemorated by a gathering at the Beehive given by the Minister of Social Welfare, Dr Cullen. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, and his deputy, Mr Palmer, said that 50 years on from the beginning of the Welfare State, Labour had shown its commitment to continuing and modernising the social services. “This Government has begun the most wideranging review of social policies that has been conducted since the Welfare State was first introduced in 1938,” they said in a joint statement. Social policy reform was the main focus of the Government’s second term in office.—PA
