Kiwi research

Sir, —I share R. L. Montgomery’s, disgust (September 7) over withdrawal of Government support for kiwi research. There has been an awareness for many years of the extreme vulnerability of our national bird and how quickly the scales could tip towards its extinction in the wild (remember the little spotted kiwi, which was once widespread on the mainland, now existing only on offshore islands). We have received the appalling news, public notice by

an Austrian scientist researching kiwis in Northland, of a marauding dog killing more than 500 kiwis before being eliminated. Ever since European settlement, the kiwi has been under attack by predatory animals and human despoliation of its habitat, still going on in the name of “progress.” How can an ancient, highly specialised species like the kiwi withstand this onslaught indefinitely? Only careful monitoring, generously funded, can give our world-renowned kiwis a fighting chance of survival into the next century. — Yours, etc.,

KATHLEEN C. HARRISON. September 8, 1988.
