Hotel veto
Sir,—What do 14,000 unemployed Cantabrians and one councillor have in common? Your "hotel veto” article (September 1) has the answer. You reported Cr Shackel as saying that he was “dismayed” at the recent Planning Tribunal decision disallowing a Waimairi District Council scheme change allowing a tourist hotel development. I am certain that most of the 14,000 unemployed are also dismayed at the rejection of a proposal with the potential to attract many thousands of visitors and provide hundreds of jobs. If not dismayed perhaps, they are disdainful, or disillusioned or disgusted, or see the decision as a disaster. Cr Shackel commented: “We should all stand for a moment’s silence.” In my view, in the interest of progress, nothing short of a year’s silence — by the great clobbering machine — will suffice. If Christchurch is to avoid the fate of other South Island towns, it urgently needs more Shackels and fewer shackles. — Yours, etc., J. K. MOIR. September 7, 1988.
