Riccarton colt tops Karaka sale
By DAVID MCCARTHY A two-year-old Vice Regal colt, which had been showing promise from the Riccarton stable of Garth Jackson, was the toppriced lot, at $lOO,OOO, at the Horses in Training Sale held by Wrightson Bloodstock at Karaka last week.
The colt was offered by Arram Bloodstock, of Christchurch, one of whose * principals is Mitchell Mcleish who is a part-owner of Pedilum, the Oncidium mare from the Auckland cup winner Froth which is the dam of the Vice Regal youngsters. The colt was purchased by Japanese interests and will do his future racing in that country. The youngster was regarded by trainer Jackson as natural a two-year-old as he has trained, and had run a comfortable second to a Pompei Court filly, trained by John Parsons,
at the Rangiora trials a short time before the sale. Mr Mcleish, who has also sold Dancer’s Rythym out of the Jackson stable, has another youngster from Pedilum which will be bred with Don’t Forget Me this spring. Pedilum is from the same, family as Horlicks and closely related to Military Plume. Jackson was also active as a buyer at the sale acquiring a Crested Wave filly from a Bletchingly mare which is a granddaughter of the Southland Guineas winner Happy Birthday. Other purchases were a colt by Beechcraft, from the well-performed Southland race mare Albatross, winner of 10 races, and an Alibhai gelding from the Shifnal mare Evadale, dam of La Fraise- and closely related to Funny Way. -
