Samasaan injured

By

DAVID McCARTHY

Samasaan’s hopes of running in the Melbourne Cup have been dashed by a leg injury which will cause him to miss approximately three weeks work. The horse will be operated on for a splint bone injury and go straight back into work but the Melbourne trip is off and it is doubtful if he can be fitted for the Lion Brown New Zealand Cup given the limited time at trainer Garth Jackson’s disposal. Samasaan suffered leg trouble last year which caused him to be a late withdrawal from the Melbourne Cup after pulling up sore from his final Riccarton workout before travelling to Australia, four days before the cup. Splint trouble was subsequently diagnosed and treated but another bone was affected after his run in the Ashburton Cup last Tuesday. “We’ve closely monitored his leg right the way through and there had been no trouble until then. Ali Robinson said after the race he felt the horse briefly showed signs of soreness on pulling up. The fractured bone can be operated on and the horse back in work in a short time but you can’t afford to miss three weeks work at this stage of the preparation,” Jackson said.
