Mares shine at Rangiora trials

By DAVID MCCARTHY Three mares, Lady Evergreen, Joy Tripper and Hypatia won the feature heats at the Riccarton Turf Club’s trials at Rangiora yesterday. Lady Evergreen was on trial after running badly at Ashburton when she is thought to have hit a wet patch on the track. She did not have a lot to spare over Dan’s Double, Extra Plush and Wessex at the end of her 1200 m yesterday but won in sufficient style to suggest her next outing could produce a more encouraging result. Joytripper is down to resume over a sprint distance at the Geraldine meeting before tackling the McArdle Bloodstock Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton. She only beat a maiden, Time Flies, by a head, but in a respectable Imin 13.67 for the 1200 m and was travelling sweetly at the finish. Hypatia, ridden by stable apprentice Cheryl Walter, attended

the pace throughout the main trial and held out Robinski by a half neck with Harto and Decree Nisi close up. A good performer over middle distances last season, Hypatia has come up a treat and may also tackle the Breeders’ Stakes. Robinski, which is down to resume at Riccarton on September 30, probably in the Midspring Handicap over 1800 m, has come up well for the Lalor stable and swept up confidently from the midfield at the turn finishing well, but within himself, over the -final stages. Harto is likely to be a member of the Thistoll Whitnail team headed for Blenheim this week-end. Alberjon beat only three others in the open class 800 m event but won easily after being hooked wide at the turn. Ridden by Jamie Tullet, he beat Bayfair by four lengths with Castle Prince and Touch of Gold, now a member of the Prender-

gast stable, next. Alberjon will probably resume at Riccarton over a spring distance and has come up exceptionally well.
