Square plans considered
Private developers will be invited to submit plans for a restaurant or cafe in Cathedral Square. A development invitation brief will be prepared by the Christchurch City Council to enable it to consider other options for the Square and allow for further debate. The inner-city working party had already received a proposal for an enclosed cafe and wine bar which had generated
considerable public interest. The concept proposed a glassed-in structure be built near the entrance to the four ships court. The working party was in favour of a restaurant/ cafe as a focal point but believed it must be in harmony with the rest of the Square. The site was thought to be appropriate but there were a number of options
for funding, leasing or joint ventures which should be considered, it said. It was also argued that in view of the significance of the Square to Christchurch, public input would also be needed. The council agreed that development proposals should be called for before the working party made its final recommendation on development of the Square.
